Not a kit. Not a plastic cube on a lawn. A small, true dwelling — crooked in all the right ways — where a child's imagination is handed a front door of its own.

Every Æthersmith playhouse is designed and built by one pair of hands — mine — one at a time, to suit its family and its garden. I keep the order book small on purpose.

make it yours

Add-Ons & Flourishes

Every build begins from its tier and grows from there. Add the touches that make it wholly your own.

The Porch

An entry stoop to duck under, or a full wraparound to sit and watch the garden.

Board-&-Batten Siding

Hand-laid vertical boards and battens in place of the standard siding.

Stained-Glass Window

A true leaded rose or feature window, made to catch the morning light.

Climate Comfort

A discreet mini-split to keep a grown-up's studio cool right through summer.

Built-in Furniture

Window seats, shelves, a desk or daybed — joined right into the walls.

Lighting & Lanterns

Extra solar lighting, warm string lights, and a hanging lantern at the door.

Your Own Palette

Hand-picked colors, shingle patterns, and finishes, top to bottom.

Iron-Style Hardware

Forged-look hinges, handles, and a knocker to match the tale.

✧ Shown as concept sketches — photographed as each one is built. ✧

how it's made

From Daydream to Doorstep

A slow, deliberate craft in four movements.

1

The Conversation

I listen for the world your child already lives in — the tales, the colors, the corner of the garden.

2

The Drawing

Hand-drawn plans, tuned to your garden, your budget, and the roofline you fell for.

3

The Joinery

Cut and shaped by hand from honest timber and cedar — every window and shingle made one at a time.

4

The Raising

Built in place on your ground — no flat-pack, no delivery truck. Raised board by board until the windows are lit.

my story

Made by Hand, for the Young at Heart

Æthersmith Craftworks started with a workshop, a stubborn grandfather, and a daughter who wanted a castle. My grandfather taught me to do a thing the right way the first time — to treat the wood, and the people you build for, with respect. So when I built that first playhouse, I built it the way he'd have wanted: by hand, from scratch, every shingle and window shaped in my own shop.

I've spent my life making things and learning old skills — carving, cabin-building, sewing my daughter's fantasy costumes — and I pour all of it into these little houses. Real cedar and timber. Arched windows cut by hand. Cedar shims laid on the gables one at a time. Every joint finished as if it will be handed down, because it will.

These playhouses are the first of a larger dream I'm building toward — a whole world of handcrafted, storybook places. I keep the order book small on purpose and raise each one by hand, on your ground. The waitlist is how I keep the craft honest.

Questions & Answers

Where do you build them?
On your ground. I raise each playhouse in place, board by board — no flat-pack kit, no delivery truck. I come to your site and build it there.
Do I need a building permit?
In most places, no. At 8×8 (64 sq ft) these sit under the building-permit threshold in most jurisdictions as a small, temporary accessory structure. It's also why I light them with solar and power them with a simple plug rather than permanent wiring — permanent electrical can change that. Always confirm your own local codes.
What are they made of?
Real timber, framed and clad by hand, with cedar-shim scalloped gables and hand-cut arched and circle windows. Higher tiers add real leaded and stained glass. Every joint is finished as if it will be handed down — because it will.
Are they safe for children?
Yes. At the top tier I use real tempered safety glass, and every build is finished with little ones in mind — sturdy stairs or a ladder, smooth edges, and solid joinery meant to last for years.
How long does a build take?
Several weeks, depending on the tier, the add-ons, and the season. I keep the order book small on purpose so each build gets my full attention — which is why commissions run by waitlist.
How does payment work?
In three stages: a deposit reserves your commission and covers materials to begin; a second payment at "dried-in," when the roof is on and it's weatherproof; and the balance on completion. The full schedule is laid out in your written quote.
Is there a version for grown-ups?
There is — the Big Ones line: reading nooks and studios built from the very same shell, in the same three tiers. Toggle to it in the collection above, or design one in the studio.
How do I commission one?
Commissions open by waitlist, a few each season. Join the waitlist, and when your place opens I'll invite you into the design studio to shape your build and receive a hand-confirmed quote.
Do you have a referral offer?
Yes. Share your referral link and a friend takes $200 off their build — and you receive a $200 Visa gift card once their playhouse is complete. Your link appears the moment you join the waitlist.
